It is approaching the festive time of year when we like to get together with friends and family for a glass of warm mulled wine or sparkling Prosecco.

However it is important to be aware of the health implications of consuming too much alcohol. A glass of wine can contain as many calories as a piece of chocolate and a pint of lager has about the same calories as a packet of crisps.

Drinking five pints of lager a week adds up to 22,200 calories a year which is the equivalent to eating 221 doughnuts!

Tips to avoid weight gain from drinking alcohol include alternating an alcoholic drink with a glass of water, don’t drink on an empty stomach and pace yourself by taking smaller sips.
