Diabetes Week 14 – 20 June 2015
17 June 2015
Diabetes is a chronic condition and it is thought that around 630,000 people in the UK are unaware they have it.
The aim of Diabetes week is to raise awareness of the condition as well as raise vital funds to support the work of Diabetes UK.
The causes of diabetes vary depending on a person’s genetic makeup, family history, ethnicity, health and environmental factors.
Type 1 diabetes is caused by the immune system destroying the cells in the pancreas that make insulin, which means the body does not have enough insulin to function normally. Triggers such as a viral or bacterial infection, chemical toxins within food or an underlying genetic disposition may be involved in the development of type 1 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes is most often linked with a family history of type 2 diabetes. There are a variety of risk factors which increase the chances of developing the condition. These include obesity, living a sedentary lifestyle, increasing age and bad diet. Pregnancy and illness can also be risk factors for type 2 diabetes.
